About Joy for Books
What is Joy for Books?
Joy for Books, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the literacy engagement gap by expanding children's access to high-quality, culturally diverse literature through intentional curation and educator-centered distribution.
Does Joy for Books provide direct reading or classroom instruction?
No. Joy for Books is a book donation and curation organization, not an instructional tutoring or curriculum delivery service. We empower classroom teachers, librarians, and community literacy leaders by placing exceptional, vetted titles into their hands so they can activate them in their own learning spaces.
Why focus on culturally diverse children's literature?
Representation is an essential literacy strategy. Grounded in Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop's framework of mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, when children see their own identities and lived experiences reflected on the page, voluntary reading and engagement surge. Increased reading volume directly drives vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, and academic confidence.
Book Selection & Curation
How are books selected for donation?
Rather than moving unvetted remainder stock or bulk overruns, every single book in our collection is evaluated using a proprietary 17-point structured rubric. We screen specifically for cultural authenticity, literary merit, developmental appropriateness, and engagement potential.
Do you accept physical book donations of used titles?
To ensure all students receive brand-new, high-quality, and intentionally vetted literature that meets our curation standards, we do not accept unsolicited used book drops. The best way to support our book supply is through financial contributions or purchasing directly from our curated wishlists.

Can a school, district, or organization hire Joy for Books for consulting or professional development?
Joy for Books, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public charity focused on book donation, curation, and community literacy initiatives. While our core programs are donation-based and awarded through grant cycles, we periodically consider custom consulting engagements—such as classroom and media center collection diversity audits, curated acquisition lists, and educator workshops—on a limited basis depending on staff capacity.
Can you curate a custom book collection for our school, organization, or corporate giving program?
Yes. We partner with foundations, PTAs, corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, and school districts looking to sponsor and deploy custom-curated book collections. We handle the vetting, title selection using our 17-point evaluation rubric, and order coordination to ensure high-impact delivery.
Can we book a speaker or keynote for an event or staff training?
Our leadership is available for select keynotes, panel discussions, and professional development sessions focused on representation in children's publishing, early literacy engagement strategies, and community-driven book access.
